Description
Determined to conquer a lifetime of shyness, Harriet Knight challenges herself to do one thing a day in December that scares her, including celebrating Christmas without her family. But when dog-walker Harriet meets her newest client, exuberant spaniel Madi, she adds an extra challenge to her list – dealing with Madi's temporary dog-sitter, gruff doctor Ethan Black, and their very unexpected chemistry.
Ethan thought he was used to chaos, until he met Madi – how can one tiny dog cause such mayhem? To Ethan, the solution is simple – he will pay Harriet to share his New York apartment and provide 24-hour care. But there's nothing simple about how Harriet makes him feel.
Ethan's kisses make Harriet shine brighter than the stars over moonlit Manhattan. But when his dog-sitting duties are over, and Harriet returns to her own home, will she dare to take the biggest challenge of all – letting Ethan know he has her heart for life, not just for Christmas?
Review
I've had this book on my TBR pile for a while but I was waiting for the right time of year to read it - just me - you could read it at any time of the year, but I really wanted to imagine being in NY at Christmas time and it did just that for me.
I felt like the characters had walked into this book rather than being written, they came to life with all their back story so easily and effortlessly that I was immediately drawn into the story. Yes, it's a romance and really if you aren't looking for that - pick up another book instead!
Harriet has set herself challenges and we meet her at the beginning of the book part way through her challenge of online dating. Although it's a light hearted book there is a back story of why Harriet feels she needs challenges and it was a little sad. I just loved how Harriet's confidence built through the book and loved her character and her empathy with dogs. A really witty supporting character Susan was very amusing too. This is apparently part of a series of books which I hadn't realised. Although Harriet and her sister have appeared in previous books I easily read this as a standalone book.
So if you are looking for a nice feel good seasonal read - this is the book for you. As one of the characters says "like a hug in a mug", but in this case it's in the book.
I'm giving this book five out of five stars. My thanks to Netgalley for a ARC to review.
