Body Count - Julie Mae Cohen

Description

Saffy Huntley-Oliver returns in the long-awaited sequel to Julie Mae Cohen's blockbuster thriller, BAD MEN.

Bad men beware . . .

Serial killer Saffy Huntley-Oliver's life is going great.

She's got a fabulous new boyfriend, Jonathan. She has literally got away with murder. And now that she's no longer single, she can get back to her favourite hobby: killing bad men.

Particularly Sir Thomas West, a children's TV star who truly deserves to die.

But there are a few little snags. For one, her beloved sister Susie is still dating that insufferable Finlay. For another, Sir Thomas has a very large bodyguard. And Jonathan himself has given up his job investigating true crime, despite all the tempting corpses that Saffy keeps putting in his way.

All of this would be easy to ignore in the flush of new love. Except Saffy's never been in love before, and it's weird. She's having difficulty separating romance from homicide. Especially when someone discovers Saffy's secret hobby and starts sending Jonathan coded messages about her crimes.

Is someone trying to break them up? Or trying to hunt her down?

Review

When I finished Bad Men I wished for a second book - and here it is!

The thing about the first book, was that with Saffy being a serial killer she could not get a serious boyfriend, but this book changes all that. Jonathan who we met in the first book is now staying with Saffy and well things are looking good (if slow) on the relationship front. However, Saffy still knows a few bad men that need to be ended.

There is more of the backstory to Saffy and her sister Susie in this book and a lot more emotional insight into Saffy. At first I was starting to think I wasn't enjoying the book as much as the first one, but then things got really interesting and I kept finding myself thinking - how is she going to get out of this.

As with the first book the humour is very dark and there are obviously things the bad men have done, although not too many details are given. With Johnathan receiving clues about Saffy's crimes and him being a true crime investigator will he finally realise who Saffy is?

I'm giving this book 4 out of 5 stars. My thanks to netgalley for the ARC and the invite from  Bonnier Books UK to review this book.

Fair Play - Louise Hegarty

Description

This is a murder mystery. This is a story about love. Or is it? . . .

Fair Play is the puzzle-box story of two competing tales that brilliantly lay bare the real truth of life - the terrifying mystery of grief.

'A treat – clever, confident, and always surprising, a mystery story that ingeniously escapes the locked room of the genre to take on the biggest questions of life and death' Paul Murray, author of THE BEE STING

'Dazzling, formally subversive, brimming with compassion' Colin Walsh, author of KALA

Abigail and her brother Benjamin have always been close. To celebrate his birthday, Abigail hires a grand old house and gathers their friends together for a murder mystery party. As the night goes on, they drink too much and play games. Relationships are forged, consolidated or frayed. Someone kisses someone they shouldn’t, someone else’s heart is broken.

In the morning, everyone wakes up – except Benjamin.

Suddenly everything is not quite what it seems. An eminent detective arrives determined to find Benjamin’s killer. The house now has a butler, a gardener and a housekeeper. This is a locked-room mystery, and everyone is a suspect.

As Abigail attempts to fathom her brother’s unexpected death in a world that has been turned upside down, she begins to wonder whether perhaps the true mystery might have been his life . . .

Review

At first I wasn't sure what I had just finished reading, I needed time to digest it.

The book opens with Abigail preparing an Air BNB for the yearly NY party/her Brother's birthday. So far so good. The guests begin to arrive, rather a lot to keep track of for me.

The next day is Benjamin's (her brother) birthday. But he never wakes up to celebrate. He is found in a locked bedroom. A fictional detective and his sidekick turn up to investigate and it appears the house the guests are in, is not a Air BNB, but a grand house that Abigail and her brother own. They even have their own servants. It would seem we are also transported back to the 1930s judging by the dialogue. Strange I thought, reading on and deciding to stick with it.

I actually enjoyed the fictional detective and his powers of deduction ala Monsieur Poirot. The plot became a little like the "Sliding Doors" film. It got a tedious when there was a lot of repeated dialogue, which I scan read. Maybe italics might have been good at this point to distinguish the prose just read.

Then came the ending. Which at first floored me, I had no idea what had happened. Mulling it over for some time after finishing I think I can reconcile what Abigail was doing and the reason for the ending, but that would be a spoiler.

Most important to mention is that this is not an Agatha Christie clone, or a mystery per se. The trope is used to convey much more than that, so you may be disappointed, or confused if you are expecting it to be purely a murder mystery.

The more I mull, the more I realise how clever the writing is, but it won't be for everyone. So I am giving this book 4 out of 5 stars. The book is published 3 April 2025. My thanks to netgalley for the ARC to review.

Vera Wong's Guide to Snooping (on a Dead Man) - Jesse Sutanto

Description

The follow-up to the bestselling Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice to Murderers

Tea-shop owner. Matchmaker. Detective?

Vera Wong is perfectly content as a teashop owner. She is definitely not seeking opportunities for amateur sleuthing. But what else is she to do when a distressed woman called Millie asks for her help?

Okay, perhaps Vera wheedled the story out of her. And maybe the case file for Millie’s missing friend Thomas didn’t exactly fall into her lap. Everyone knows a locked briefcase is just asking to be opened by someone handy with a hairpin.

Not even the aroma of chrysanthemum tea can stop Vera from catching the scent of this mystery. However dangerous it is, Vera intends to uncover the truth in the only way that this Chinese mother knows how: by spilling the tea.

‘I thoroughly loved it. With a Vera in your life nothing bad can ever happen!’ J. M. Hall, bestselling author of A Spoonful of Murder

‘Had me laughing aloud within its first five pages. Charming, hilarious and heartfelt’ Emily Henry, New York Times bestselling author of Beach Read

‘A dazzling debut full of humour and love. A comedy caper, doused in black humour, comical references, mixed with romance – fans of Crazy Rich Asians will love it’ My Weekly

‘Brilliant, wicked and dead, dead funny’ Andi Osho, Asking For A Friend

Review

I loved it.

We met Vera in Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice to Murderers and it was so good to catch up with her again. This book seemed a little more serious than the first book, but that's not to say it was still funny. Whilst this is a standalone I think you would enjoy it more after reading the first book. There is some recapping, which was useful for me, but maybe not enough to flesh out the background and the characters for a first time reader.

In this book we see Vera become a Tik Tok sensation and of course add more people to those she is now counting as family. She really is an incredible and endearing character. There were a couple of sensational scenes with Vera sticking up for her new found friends. Although I feared for Vera this time, as she does hit home with her snooping regarding a very serious undercover crime.

Winifred in the next door shop is also back with the gentle feuding between her and Vera. This time with new pastries that sounded incredible and made me ache to visit her and Vera. I guess we will just have to hope there is a another book.

I'm giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. My thanks to netgalley for the ARC to review. This book is published on 10 April 2025.

Review

I decided to review this book based on the other books by the author I had read and enjoyed. I didn't realise that this was a cosy mystery or that it is book #3 in a series.

I started off reading on the back foot, as it felt like there was something I should have known before I began. It wasn't until a few pages in that reference to the earlier mysteries was made. I read on and really it didn't make any difference to me. Other than I had no back story in my mind.

It was nice to read a mystery where the main character (Morwenna) is a mature lady and I think that works to her advantage in the investigations she undertakes. In this case a DJ she is friendly with, asks her to meet up later to discuss some goings on she thinks could be explosive if uncovered. The DJ never makes the meeting as her body is found washed up on the beach despite her being a very strong and experienced swimmer.

Morwenna is a librarian and also helps run her daughter's tea shop so she is a very busy lady. However, she still finds time to meddle in police investigations and do some investigating of her own. The police do their best to discourage her maverick detection but to no avail.

I enjoyed the book and the characters. It was a nice cosy read and going along at a nice pace until the last third of the book. Then it became very fast  with action and not at all cosy really, but a page turner for me.

I'm giving this book 4 out of 5 stars. My thanks to netgalley for the ARC to review.
This book will be published on 4 January 2025.

The Fellowship of Puzzle Makers - Samuel Burr

Description

An extraordinary, gloriously uplifting novel about the power of friendship and the puzzling ties that bind us

Clayton Stumper might be twenty-six years old, but he dresses like your grandpa and drinks sherry like your aunt. Abandoned at birth on the steps of the Fellowship of Puzzlemakers, he was raised by a group of eccentric enigmatologists and now finds himself among the last survivors of a fading institution.

When the esteemed crossword compiler and main maternal presence in Clayton's life, Pippa Allsbrook, passes away, she bestows her final puzzle on him: a promise to reveal the mystery of his parentage and prepare him for life beyond the walls of the commune. As Clay begins to unpick the clues, he uncovers something even the Fellowship have never been able to solve—and it's a secret that has the potential to change everything.

Review

I researched this book before buying it in case it was going to be too hard to solve the puzzles. I got my copy on kindle and looked the preview pages. It seemed that you didn't need to be able to solve the puzzles to read the story, so I made my purchase.

I do love puzzles and at first I actually learnt a couple of things, so that was cool. The story was really rather charming to begin with but then I felt it began to be very drawn out. The dialogue also became cutesy and I found I wasn't rushing to pick it back up to read.

Set over two timelines that didn't work for me. I think it would have been better written in two parts. Some very nice characters and nothing too awful happens, so it's a cosy read.

Well I made it to the end of the book and have to say overall I was a little bit disappointed with the story. I think that the book was probably a little bit overhyped. So if you are really a puzzler maybe give it a miss.

I'm giving it 3 out of 5 stars.

Review

Is this another "The Girl on the Train"?- no. Is it a fabulous read in it's own right - yes!

Just before I started the book I saw a comment that this was nothing like TGOTT, and I worried that I had set myself up with a DNF. Someone living on an island all alone, cut off from the world, how exciting can this be? I thought. A shocking discovery - will it be that shocking?

Becker has a job to do. He needs to visit the island and understand why Grace isn't playing ball with the wishes in the will of the late artist Vanessa. Becker has a complicated life, but his love of the artist and his dream job makes him want to visit the island, and meet Grace himself.

I loved the writing from the first page, it's very different and whilst descriptive, I felt every word deserved to be read. I was so taken by the portrayal of the artist that I began to think she actually existed, especially when her letters and diary entries were included. Also very vivid were the descriptions of her art and I longed to be able to actually see them in person. All this just a backdrop to what is really happening. So much planning has gone into the plot and the resultant story telling.

It's certainly a slow burner.  It's a well thought out and meandering ride until it reaches the fast paced ending. For the trip you are taken on I felt was worth the scenic route.

It's been a while since I have really wanted to keep reading a book, couldn't wait to get back to it. For that reason this deserves 5 stars from me.  My thanks to netgalley for the ARC to review.

Smoke and Murders - J L Blackhurst

Description

COMING SOON – PRE-ORDER NOW The follow-up to Three Card Murder and the second book in a gripping new mystery series introducing Detective Tess Fox and her con-artist sister Sarah Jacobs.

Members of the Lewes Bonfire Society would say afterwards that the event would have been a huge success that year, if it hadn’t been for the dead body…

When the charred remains of MP Rupert Millington are found inside a burning effigy, no one knows how they got there, but there are plenty of rumours about whodunnit.

The lead suspect wants Detective Tess Fox and her con-artist sister Sarah Jacobs to help clear her name. She says she's being framed, but surely there is no smoke without fire.

The heat is on when a second victim is killed in a locked room while Tess and Sarah are in the building. Can the duo solve this puzzling mystery and find the real killer before they strike again?

Review

We are back with the two sisters Tess (police officer) and Sarah (con artist) from the previous book. I don't think you will get much out of this book if you don't read the previous book first. There are so many references which you won't understand otherwise.

Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, even though a lot of it was far fetched, I found this one a little harder to get into. I also found it too incredible how much time Sarah spent with her sister Tess whilst she was investigating an official police matter. There was the humour which was good and the banter between the sisters was also great fun. Some of the other characters read like they were caricatures and I got Midsomer Murder vibes more than once.

It was quite the tangled web that was woven between the characters in the village and more than once I got confused who was who, but then that seemed to be the order of the day with this story. It was this that made me decide whilst reading this book that I would not read a follow on, if there was to be one. Then I got to the last page and that all changed. What a cliff hanger is all I am going to say... I need book 3!

I'm giving this book 3 out of stars. My thanks to netgalley for the ARC and HQStories for the invite to read this book. It will be published on 12 September 2024.

The Lantern of Lost Memories - Sanaka Hiiragi

Description

One photograph, one treasured memory, one chance to go back . . .

In a cosy photography studio in the mountains between this world and the next, someone is waking up as if from a dream. A kind man will hand them a hot cup of tea and gently explain that, having reached the end of their life, they have one final task.

There is a stack of photos on their lap, one for every day of their life, and now they must choose the pictures that capture their most treasured memories, which will be placed in a beautiful lantern. Once completed, it will be set spinning, and their cherished moments will flash before their eyes, guiding them to another world.

But, like our most thumbed-over photographs, our favourite memories become faded with age, so each visitor to the studio has the chance to choose one day to return to and photograph afresh. Each has a treasured story to tell, from the old woman rebuilding a community in Tokyo after a disaster, to the flawed Yakuza man who remembers a time when he was kind, and a strong child who is fighting to survive.

Extraordinarily moving and wise, The Lantern of Lost Memories is a beautiful Japanese tale about the people that make us and the moments that change us.

Review

A beautifully written book.

You know they say your life flashes before you when you die? Well in this book the concept is taken to mean a lantern which shows a photograph for every year of your life. The choosing of which photographs are in the lantern is down to the deceased. They meet with a special man in a photography studio while they pass between this world and the next. It is he who helps them navigate the selection of their photographs from a stack of photos, each one a day in their life.

Sometimes the memory they favour the most is not very vivid because it has been replayed by the deceased many times. The photography studio has an answer for this. They let you select a camera and take you back to the day of the memory to retake the photograph. We also get to go back with them, and this is how we learn about the life they have lived.

As you can imagine this is a story for those who like a little fantasy and are not hung up on facts. We meet three people in the book as they decide on their photographs for their lantern. Although this sounds very cosy it does also deal with some very real abuse issues. However they are dealt with sensitively and not too graphically.

There is a little twist toward the end of the book which I just loved. Maybe there will be a follow on book? Which would be very nice to have.

I'm giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. My thanks to netgalley for the ARC to review. The book is published on 22 August 2024.

Mina's Matchbox - Yoko Ogawa

Description

On sleepless nights, I open the matchbox and reread the story of the girl who gathered shooting stars.

After the death of her father, twelve-year-old Tomoko is sent to live for a year with her uncle in the coastal town of Ashiya. It is a year which will change her life.

The 1970s are bringing changes to Japan and her uncle's magnificent colonial mansion opens up a new and unfamiliar world for Tomoko; its sprawling gardens are even home to a pygmy hippo the family keeps as a pet. Tomoko finds her relatives equally exotic and beguiling and her growing friendship with her cousin Mina draws her into an intoxicating world full of secret crushes and elaborate storytelling.

Rich with the magic and mystery of youth, Mina’s Matchbox is an evocative snapshot of a moment frozen in time, and a striking depiction of a family on the edge of collapse.

Review

This was an intriguing read, although not much really happens.

As I reflect back over this book I realise that it was the beautiful writing kept me reading. There are some wonderful enchanting moments which made me gasp. You really need to be in the mindset of this being set in Japan and not the Western world.

Tomoko goes to live with her affluent family in Ashiva for a year in 1972. Apart from the obvious benefits of the lifestyle there are some quirky things that happen. Such as her cousin Mina riding a baby hippo to school each day. Mina is also asthmatic and this results in some time in hospital at various points in the book and how Tomoko finds her own way in the family without her presence.

The relationship Tomoko forms with Mina is charming and sweet. The book also charts the new found maturity that Tomoko experiences. There are a few loose ends that I wish had been explored more. I guess as it is being told from the perspective of an adult looking back on their childhood, this relfects their lack of understanding of what was happening.

I'm giving this book 3 out of 5 stars. My thanks to netgalley for the ARC to review. The book is published on 15 August 2024.

Praise for Scandalous Women:

'Scrumptious' Eve Chase

'Sensational' Tracy Rees

'Perfect' Elizabeth Freemantle

'A triumph' Alex Brown

Review

I could not put this book down!

A story of Jackie Collins and Jacqueline Susann and not only their rise to fame with their respective books, but the sexism and trials and tribulations they encountered along the way. Whilst the account is fictious it was so much fun to read, Gill really brought the two authors alive.

My favourite character was Nancy the fictious book intern and her navigation of New York in the 1960s. Even though the blatant sexism she encountered at work was hard to read I was routing for her throughout. From arriving to find she had no place to stay, to her friendship with Jacqueline Susann and later Jackie Collins, it was just a delight to read. The character was a brilliant bridge between the two author stories.

Gill wove factual detail into her story so well, that when I had finished reading I was grateful for her notes on what did and didn't actually happen. Also how she had entwined certain facts and fiction to make for a gripping read.

I'm giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. My thanks to Avon Books UK and netgalley for the ARC to review. This book is published on 13 August 2024.

No such thing as perfect - Emma Hughes

Description

'I lost count of the number of times I laughed out loud, I was rooting for Laura from the first page. Tender, funny, smart and brilliantly observed. The perfect blend of uplifting escapism and social satire, an utter page turner and such a clever, perceptive moving one. I LOVED it!' DAISY BUCHANAN

No one's life is as perfect as it looks.

Least of all Laura Morrison's. (Although she's not sure how perfect hanging onto your job by a thread and sleeping on an air mattress at your sister's looks, in all honesty.)

When Laura gets the chance to trial Cupid - a high-tech new dating service which will draw on everything she's ever done online to find her perfect match - she figures it's got to be worth a try.

She can't believe her luck when good-looking, kind considerate Adam turns up for their first date. On paper he's...well...perfect.

But when Laura develops feelings for the person who led her to Adam in the first place, familiar doubt creeps in.

Maybe for life to start falling into place, Laura has to learn to let go...

Sharply-observed and laugh-out-loud funny, NO SUCH THING AS PERFECT is the perfect novel for anyone who has ever wondered if there's a formula for finding love.

Review

A different kind of rom-com.

Laura's not much going for her. Her job at the Bugle magazine is on the line, she's sleeping on an air mattress and the guy she once dated is now loved up with their ex flat mate. So when an assignment to test Cupid a new dating service comes along she grabs it, as it might just save her job and get her a boyfriend.

Part of the book is a look back at Laura's childhood and also her relationship with Walker who is now with her ex flat mate. These parts of the book felt like a bit of a pity part at times and I wasn't sure what they were adding to the current story.

Everything seems great when she meets Adam who is the hook up from the dating service. Everyone likes him even her snooty sister. He seems to know what she wants and is willing to put himself out for her. It's still not enough for Laura as she then decides maybe another guy is the one she really wants.

I did like the comedic writing and Laura's friend Lil is a great character along with her little girl Dora. I just didn't really warm to Laura especially when she starts to mess things up. It certainly doesn't follow the usual rom-com path and kept me interested to the end.

I'm giving this book 4 out of 5 stars. My thanks to netgalley for the ARC to review.

What on earth happens now that everyone knows how she really feels?

This is the perfect book club read for fans of David Nicholls, Holly Smale and Beth O’Leary, asking what it is that makes for a life well lived.

Review

Very funny and desperately needs to be on a screen soon. There is one scene in particular which was so comically well written, I couldn't help but laugh.
 .
A physic told Nell she was going to die, the exact date - so of course she believed her. To be fair the other person she said would die, did die, you can see why Nell was so convinced. As Nell arranges for all her worldly possessions to be sold, cancelled and given away I was worried. I understand she didn't want to leave a mess for anyone to have to clear up, but when she doesn't die - what a mess! Not to mention all the letters she's written, will anyone still speak to her, even if she is is back from the dead?

At times Nell did grate with me a little, when she lost her ability to make decisions, and stick to them. That actually just added to the plot and the interest though. My favourite character was the fabulous Juno, I will not explain why, as she needs to be discovered all on her own.

I was so intrigued by the concept of this book and the author really did it justice in her writing and character development. Even after I finished reading the book I was wondering what was going to happen next. Then I remembered I hadn't got it to read anymore …

I'm giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. My thanks to netgalley for the ARC to review.

Review

A great relaxing read but it might make you hungry!

This is the first book I have read by this author, I have already downloaded two others by her, as I enjoyed this one so much.

Everyone has different reasons for attending the inaugural cooking school at La Maison du Paradis. Some are running away, others are there to hone a new skill and some are there to work. It seems someone is determined not to make friends, but is envious when she sees some of the others enjoying each others company, and having a great time. A quick witted tongue makes her a little less welcoming to more or less  everyone, and leaves her at the fringe of the group. Just one of the characters that's maybe misunderstood in the beginning. You'll get to know them all and why they are there.

I couldn't wait to get back to this book and read about what would unfold next. It's got a little bit of everything really and that makes for a great read.

A tried and tested plot line - a group of people from different backgrounds descend on a venue to learn a skill. I do think that the author brought something new though, if only that she had more mature characters and it was interesting to read about their attitude to life.

I liked the ending which in a way was in two parts. Not neatly tied up, but a somewhat realistic outcome.

I'm giving this book 4 out of 5 stars. It will be published on 25 April 2024.

If you love Bake Off - then you will probably love this book too.

Jenny is 77 and decides before it is too late she needs to make a mark in the world. So she applies to be a contestant on the TV programme Britain Bakes, and is successful. The BB programme has many similarities with GBBO and to me felt like a glimpse behind the scenes with all the bits you don't see, which I loved.

Whilst the story of Jenny appearing on TV is happening there is a also a flashback storyline from Jenny's youth interspersed in the pages. It was a little bit of a jolt from the lovely baking and at first I did resent it a little for intruding on my enjoyment. So many of Jenny's recipes come from her family and so the tie in with each of the storylines was a recipe.

Wonderful descriptions of the baking which made me want to get in the kitchen, or maybe just eat cake! Jenny is a lovely character and so is her husband. That's why when she hides not one but two secrets from him it is worrying if their relationship will survive.

A wonderful ending left me with a tear in my eye. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the down to earth writing. No trying to tie up loose ends in neat words, it was at times a little brutal even, but I still couldn't wait to get back to reading this book.

I'm giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. My thanks to netgalley for the ARC to review. The book will be published on 28 March 2024.

Review

I loved Thrown, but struggled to get into this one as easily.

I could really hear Sara's voice coming through in this book. Possibly because I know she is the daughter of a farmer and often recounts tales on the radio. I think this also enabled her vivid descriptions of farm life throughout the book.

Josie is a 50 something and has split up with her husband, but what does she want out of life now she finally has the chance to find out. I certainly wasn't expecting what happened to Josie, and at times worried that she had bitten off far more than she could manage.

I thought the first half of the book dragged a little for me. It contained a lot of descriptive writing and revisiting the past. I prefer narration so it could just be me. I never thought about not finishing it, but it didn't make me want to get back to it. The second part of the book was much more lively with a little twist, which I hadn't seen coming, as I thought I had it all sussed out.

Overall I enjoyed the book and the characters, which were well developed and had depth.

I'm giving this book 4 out of 5 stars. My thanks to netgalley for the ARC to review. The book is published on 26 March 2024.

'Must read' Bella
'A brilliant thriller' Closer
'Gripping and powerful!' Lauren North
'An addictive page-turner' Samantha Tonge
'School run revenge at its best' Jacqueline Ward
'The end was a triumph, absolutely brilliant!' Rona Halsall

When single mum Ruth has a brief fling with Rob, she's mortified to discover that he lied to her. He lied to her, because he's married. Worse still, he's the husband of Janine, head of the PTA at the primary school where Ruth works as secretary, and when the truth of their fling is discovered, Ruth suddenly has a lot of enemies at the school gates.

Threatening texts begin to arrive, rumours abound and the staff room becomes hostile. But when it also starts to affect her son, a student at the school, Ruth realises you can do anything if you convince yourself it's for the sake of your child.

Even murder.

A page-turning and deeply compulsive psychological thriller about a school secretary and how dangerous it can be to make enemies at the school gates. For fans of Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty and The Rumour by Lesley Kara.

Review

I read this so quickly - a real page turner.

Ruth the School Secretary in the title has a one night stand. Little does she know that despite him saying he was single and had no children, his wife is the head of the PTA and his children go to the school she works at. When a showdown ensues at the school gates life gets very nasty very quickly for Ruth.

Who would have thought so many nasty and murderous things would happen in and around a school and the secretary who works there. From silly niggles to the prospect of losing her job Ruth spends most of the time on the back front in this mystery. When she's told to grab a snake not by its head, she becomes embroiled in something far more serious than petty squabbling when she decides to fight back. She justifies it as protecting her child, but it begins to get out of hand.

Some of the time I couldn't work out whether the incidents were really happening, or if Ruth was making it up. Interspersed with letters from a prison you know something happened, but just what you are yet to find out. A really gripping, page turning story.

I'm giving this book 4 out of 5 stars. My thanks to netgalley for the ARC to review.

The Vintage Village Bake Off - Judy Leigh

Description

Now in his seventies, Robert Parkin is stunned to find himself the unlikely sex symbol of the village gardening club.

Living in happy solitude with his cat Isaac Mewton in the Devon village of Millbrook, entertained by his mischievous chickens and goats, Robert has never figured out the rules of romance. But as the local ladies vie for his company, it soon becomes clear that Robert’s Victoria Sponge cake is the lure, and as his baking prowess grows, so does his confidence.

Cheesecakes, meringues, puddings, Robert can do it all, but his real masterpieces are his scones – ginger, rosemary, coconut, fruit, his recipes are inspired and soon come to the attention of the local media. Which county does the best cream tea – Devon or Cornwall? It’s time for an age-old debate to be settled with a competition.

Robert’s sisters Bunty and Hattie are both at crossroads in their lives, so news of their brother’s baking competition is the perfect excuse to bring them to Millbrook. And as the siblings relish each other’s company, and Robert relishes being at the heart of his community, a summer of scones may just light the way to long-lasting happiness for them all.

Review

I admit the title of this book and the author just had me wanting to read it. So I spent a good few pages wondering when the Bake Off was going to begin. I even began to think I had picked up the wrong book.

Once I settled into the story I was fine and put the Bake Off idea out of my head. Whilst this might on the surface appear to be a gentle tale there were a couple of characters who made my blood boil. Just as I was beginning to think all was well in the village there was a little incidence and I was brought back down to earth.

I loved the descriptions of the baking and the recipes - you might want to have eaten before reading! The characters were charming in the main and some even grew a backbone after decades of put downs. Eventually we got to the bake off and the deciding factor of who does have the best cream tea - Devon or Cornwall?

A delightful fun and witty read. I'm giving it four out of five stars.

Review

There were so many facets to this story and I enjoyed all of them.

What I loved most about this book is that it covered lots of things I found really interesting. For instance how patients stop the Dr and want advice on their aliments and the medical jargon. The insights into The Odyssey by Homer, and most of all how someone someone you think you know can have such a different outlook on your life.

There were so many facets to this story and I enjoyed all of them. The characters were given depth through the eyes of Heather as she sifted through what she knew of them and what they meant to her. How her relationships and path in life had changed now she was officially retired. There were also flashbacks to the past covering how she met her husband.

Slightly comical was her unexpected travelling companion to the Greek Isles who had introduced her to The Odyssey. As was the couple she breakfasted with when she couldn't avoid them. Each time I put this book down I couldn't wait to get back to it, which is always for me the sign that I am really enjoying a story. It was a wonderful read, just like all the other books I've read by this author.

I'm giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. My thanks to netgalley for the ARC to review. This book is published on 2 November 2023.

Review

Although I enjoyed the first book in this series I had difficulty getting into this one. It was nearly a DNF for me, but I read reviews that said it picked up, (and it did) so I stuck with it.

It seems like MI6 don't think their spy Emma is ready for anything too dangerous, despite her  wonderful success in the first book. It felt like Emma thought so too, with her doing little at the beginning of her mission to get the heart racing.

Maybe being set on a yacht wasn't the best plot device, as there wasn't really much she could do without drawing attention to herself. But for me it was all a bit too pedestrian, with further trips into her back story. This can definitely be read as a stand alone book. If you've read the first book there may be a little too much of a recap.

Once the action got going I did begin to enjoy the book, especially when a little twist happened.

I'm giving this book 3 out of 5 stars. My thanks to netgalley for the ARC to review.
